I along with 3000 other people visited the annual Ewan race meet in the last weekend of September. The Ewan races is located approx. 150 klm northwest of Townsville and committee, along with the club members hold a 2 day race meet every year. The meet is held in great tradition and is considered the last “Grass Fed” horse racing meet in Qld and possibly in Australia. Horses are all kept in 1 large paddock for 4 weeks so they can simply “be normal horses again”, and are released back to the trainers just before racing starts; this keeps them all on a level playing field. Trainers, owners and Jockeys travel great distances to compete for pretty good prize money over the 2 days. I took my wife and kids along for the sixth year and had a great weekend of camping, catching up with old friends from cattle stations in the areas and making new friends too. The camping facilities are great, the horse races are very competitive. There are people of all ages and walks of life that come along to join in the fun. If you like country style hospitality and horse racing, then this is the place for you. I recommend it to anyone and everyone. Do yourself a favour and visit the website www.ewanraces.com.au to find out more.
